Hiking through Jordan

A trip to Jordan is a journey through ancient history, unforgettable adventures, and breathtaking views. Jordan feels like the warm heart of the Middle East — a land where rugged mountains and vast valleys have held stories for centuries. Nothing is ever far away, yet the desert and the starry sky feel endless.

National Geographic has named The Jordan Trail one of the world’s must-do hikes. You’ll hike part of this legendary caravan route, crossing mountains, canyons, oases, and sweeping deserts. During our 5-day trek, you'll cover 14–18 km a day and camp in the heart of nature, moving from one Nabatean campsite to another — welcomed along the way by the warm hospitality of the Bedouins.

Week schedule of the Jordan Trail

In just one week, you'll hike through the most impressive and remote trails of Jordan. You'll discover Bedouin culture, Middle Eastern hospitality, and stunning mountain ranges. Depending on the weather conditions, routes and distances may change throughout the season.

Airport transfers
  • If you book your flights through us, airport transfers to and from Amman Airport are included.

Booking your own flights but still want to use our shuttle? Please keep the following shuttle times in mind:

    • Shuttle from the airport to Madaba (day 1): 22:45
    • Shuttle from the Amman hotel to the airport (day 8): 7:00
  • Don't match our shuttle times or itinerary? You can easily take a taxi between the airport, your hotel in Madaba and downtown Amman.

Accommodation
  • During The Jordan Trail, you’ll mostly sleep in a tent. The campsites are set in the middle of nature, without sanitation facilities or running water. You can freshen up at the campsites using the water brought along.

  • You’ll spend the first night in Madaba (Black Iris Hotel) and in Petra (Sunset Hotel) in a hotel. On the last evening in central Amman, you can optionally book a hotel night (MISK Hotel).*

*Solo travelers (or participants in a group with an odd number of people) will share a room with another Jordan Trailer. We always try to room participants with someone of the same gender.

Food & drinks
  • You can join us for meals every day and sample the local Bedouin cuisine (€156 vegetarian, €160 meat). You’re welcome to bring your own food, but we especially recommend joining the friendly Bedouin dinners!

There are no restaurants or supermarkets along the hike. You can only buy something in Petra on the final day. So make sure you bring enough snacks for the entire route, such as granola bars, energy bars or dextrose tablets.

Our guides & support
  • During the trail, you’ll be accompanied by experienced Travelbase guides and locals who know the route inside out. They’ll lead the daily briefings, share tips along the way and are always there to lend a hand or have a friendly chat. Guides are always nearby during the hikes, ready to support anyone who runs into difficulties along the way.

As the route is not signposted, we don’t recommend taking it on alone. Thanks to our close collaboration with local guides, you’ll follow a carefully mapped-out route that lets you experience the real Jordan.

Travel documents
    • International passport that must be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival.
    • Visa: If you book your flights through us, it’s already included in the price. If you arrange your own flights, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass (valid for 3 months after purchase). It gives you access to Petra and takes care of your visa too.
Travelbase app
  • After booking, you'll get access to the Travelbase app. Install it before departure so you always have all the information you need at your fingertips. It contains all the practical information for before, during and after your trip:

    • Tips & tricks
    • Weekly schedule
    • Flight information
    • Chat with the other participants and guides 2 weeks before departure

Frequently Asked Questions

You can always email us if you’d like more information about this trip. Below, you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Is there on-site support?

During the trail, you’ll always hike with experienced Dutch-speaking and local guides. They’ll provide the right support, clear guidance, and extra tips along the way. You’ll also receive a morning briefing every day with practical info and key points for the day ahead.

You’ll start and finish each day together as a group. Along the way, you’ll have some freedom, and the guides will spread out across the group. You’ll always hike between the guides, and we recommend not straying too far from them, as there are no arrows or trail markers along the route. That way, it stays adventurous — but above all, safe and worry-free.

You will also be given access to a chat group with all the other participants departing on the same date just before you set off. You can use this group to chat with each other or with our team.

Can I customise the trip to my own liking?

As we offer a fully organised trip, it is not possible to adjust the duration or itinerary. However, you are free to extend your trip independently by spending a few extra days on site afterwards, for example, or continuing your journey to another country.

Who is this trip suitable for?

Anyone between 16 and 65 years old with good fitness and a sense of adventure can do this trail. Please note that people under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The trip involves a healthy amount of physical activity, so being in good health is essential. Please also keep in mind that temperatures can be warm.

Children are not allowed.

Want to try a multi day hike for the first time, but unsure about your fitness?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What kinds of physical activity do I do regularly, and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that affect my ability to hike?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 km, with a backpack of 10kg, over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train with a clear goal in the coming months to prepare properly?

If your answers give you full confidence to head out on an adventure, then this trail is definitely for you. One week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to get you ready so you can complete the route comfortably.

Can I book this trip as a solo traveller?

Yes, absolutely. You can book this trip on your own. Depending on the departure date, there are often other solo travellers joining as well, so you’ll likely meet fellow hikers along the way if you’d like.

Still unsure and want to test yourself before you head out on trail?

Try one of our micro adventures, such as The Packraft Trail.

What should I bring?

You’ll receive a detailed packing list well in advance, with everything you need for the trip.

The basics include sturdy A/B hiking boots with ankle support, a large backpack or duffel (65–80L), a daypack (25–35L), decent camping gear, and protective (rain) clothing.

When can I do this trip?

The calendar on the website shows all departure dates, available spots and prices.

Would you like to be notified personally when new departure dates are posted online? If so, please complete this form with your details.

Can I modify my registration?

You can easily add or cancel most optional extras up to a few weeks before departure. Please bear in mind the following rules:

  • Availability & timing: Changes are always subject to availability at the time. The sooner you decide, the better your chances of it still being possible!
  • Flights: Once your name has been confirmed, you can no longer cancel the flight. You may still be able to add a flight, provided there are still seats available.
