Hiking through Jordan

A trip to Jordan is a journey through ancient history, unforgettable adventures, and breathtaking views. Jordan feels like the warm heart of the Middle East — a land where rugged mountains and vast valleys have held stories for centuries. Nothing is ever far away, yet the desert and the starry sky feel endless.

National Geographic has named The Jordan Trail one of the world’s must-do hikes. You’ll hike part of this legendary caravan route, crossing mountains, canyons, oases, and sweeping deserts. During our 5-day trek, you'll cover 14–18 km a day and camp in the heart of nature, moving from one Nabatean campsite to another — welcomed along the way by the warm hospitality of the Bedouins.

Week schedule of the Jordan Trail

In just one week, you'll hike through the most impressive and remote trails of Jordan. You'll discover Bedouin culture, Middle Eastern hospitality, and stunning mountain ranges. Depending on the weather conditions, routes and distances may change throughout the season.

Practical information

Periods autumn 2026

From October 7th to November 25th, we will be traveling to Jordan every Wednesday. You can check all the specific dates via the calendar at the bottom of the website.

Base price

The Early bird base price for this trip starts at €605 per person.

The base price includes the following:

  • 4 camping nights
  • 1 hotel night (Madaba)
  • 1 hotel night (Petra)
  • All internal transport by shuttle – except for airport transport (included with our flights)
  • Guidance from our experienced Travelbase guides and local guides
  • Travelbase Trail app with all the information (tips & tricks, flight info, schedule…)

You can add various extra options to your trip.

Our guides & support

During the trail, you'll be guided by experienced Travelbase guides and locals who know the route inside and out. They provide daily briefings, share tips along the way, and are always there to help or have a nice chat. On each hike, guides are positioned at the front, middle, and back of the group to assist anyone who might need extra help.

Because the route is unmarked, we strongly advise against attempting the trail alone. With our close collaboration with local guides, you’ll follow a carefully mapped path that allows you to experience the authentic beauty of Jordan in a safe and rewarding way.

Travelbase trail app

After booking, you’ll get access to the Travelbase Trail App. Inside, you’ll find everything you need before, during, and after your trip: practical tips, flight details, and all the information for along the trail. The app is your digital guide and preparation tool in one. Make sure to install it in advance, so all the info is right at your fingertips.

Hotels & campsites

During the Jordan Trail, you will mostly sleep in a tent. The camping spots are located in the middle of nature and do not have sanitary facilities or running water.

On the first night in Madaba and in Petra, you will stay in a hotel. On the last evening in downtown Amman, you can optionally book a hotel stay. Solo travelers (or participants in an odd-numbered group) will share a room with another Jordan Trailer. We always try to pair participants of the same gender.

Food & drinks

You can join us for daily meals and taste local Bedouin cuisine (€156 vegetarian, €160 meat). You’re also welcome to bring your own food, but we especially recommend joining the cozy Bedouin dinners!

During the hike, you won’t come across any restaurants or supermarkets. You’ll only be able to buy something on the last day in Petra. So be sure to bring enough snacks for the entire route, such as granola bars, energy bars, or glucose tablets.

Necessary documents

For a trip to Jordan, a valid passport is required, which must be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival. Without a valid passport, you won't be able to enter the country.

Additionally, you will need a visa. If you book your flights through us, this is already included in the price. If you're arranging your own flight, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass as it provides access to Petra and takes care of your visa as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can always email us if you’d like more information about this trip. Below, you’ll find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Who is this trail suited for?

Who is this trail suited for?

Because a trail’s difficulty depends on several factors, we’ve put together a clear overview of those factors.

Anyone between 16 and 65 years old with good fitness and a sense of adventure can do this trail. The trip involves a healthy amount of physical activity, so being in good health is essential. Please also keep in mind that temperatures can be warm.

Children are not allowed.

Want to try a multi day hike for the first time, but unsure about your fitness?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What kinds of physical activity do I do regularly, and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that affect my ability to hike?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 km, with a backpack of 10kg, over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train with a clear goal in the coming months to prepare properly?

If your answers give you full confidence to head out on an adventure, then this trail is definitely for you. One week after booking, you’ll receive a training plan to get you ready so you can complete the route comfortably.

Can I book this trip as a solo traveller?

Yes, absolutely. You can book this trip on your own. Depending on the departure date, there are often other solo travellers joining as well, so you’ll likely meet fellow hikers along the way if you’d like.

Still unsure and want to test yourself before you head out on trail?

Try one of our micro adventures, such as The Packraft Trail.

How is the trail organised and what can you expect?

Before your trip starts, you’ll get access to our Travelbase App, packed with all the highlights, tips & tricks, and practical information. That way, you’ll know exactly what your week looks like in advance and what to expect.

During the trail, you’ll always hike with experienced Dutch-speaking and local guides. They’ll provide the right support, clear guidance, and extra tips along the way. You’ll also receive a morning briefing every day with practical info and key points for the day ahead.

You’ll start and finish each day together as a group. Along the way, you’ll have some freedom, and the guides will spread out across the group. You’ll always hike between the guides, and we recommend not straying too far from them, as there are no arrows or trail markers along the route. That way, it stays adventurous — but above all, safe and worry-free.

Is The Jordan Trail suitable for people with a fear of heights?

You’ll rarely need to walk right along a deep gorge or cliff. There’s almost always the option to stay a bit further away from the edge. On Day 1, you’ll hike through a gorge where you’ll need to climb down a few short sections, but our guides are always there to help and support you.

Can I skip a hiking day or leave the trail early if needed?

Of course, the idea is not to skip a day — the trail is designed for you to take part in all hiking days, so you should be able to complete the full route. With good health and some focused preparation, you’ll definitely be able to do it. That’s also why you’ll receive a training schedule shortly after booking, to help you build up step by step.

If you do need to stop along the way due to injury or illness, our guides will always help find a safe and practical solution.

When do I have to arrive and when can I leave?

Your first hiking day on The Jordan Trail is always the day after you arrive. So if you book the week from October 7 to 14, you’ll arrive on October 7 and start hiking on October 8.

That means you don’t need to add extra days before or after your booked week — our dates already include both the arrival day and the departure day. Want to stay longer to explore more of Jordan (like Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea)? That’s absolutely fine! In that case, you’ll arrange your flights yourself.

In the Travelbase App, you’ll see the dates as October 7 to 14. That’s your full stay:

  • October 7: arrival
  • October 8–12: hiking
  • October 13: Petra
  • October 14: departure

You can also add an optional hotel stay in Amman for the last night — in this example, that’s the night of October 13 to 14.

You can add this extra night to your booking up to two months before departure, depending on availability.

Where do we sleep and what sanitary facilities can I expect along the route?

You will sleep the first and last night in a hotel. If you choose the optional extra night, that will also be in a hotel. During the trail itself, you'll sleep in tents, in some amazing locations.

During the trail, you will encounter no sanitary facilities. This means there are no toilets and no showers. However, you can freshen up at the end of the day with the water brought by the jeeps. That water also serves as drinking water, so expect to “freshen up a bit” rather than having a long shower.

We follow a strict Leave No Trace policy. Therefore, we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper or hygiene wipes, so we can leave nature as untouched as possible.

What about food and drinks?

During the hike, you won’t come across any restaurants or supermarkets. The only place you can buy something along the way is in Petra on the last day. So make sure you bring enough snacks for the entire route — think granola bars, energy bars, nuts, or glucose for the tougher sections.

You can choose to eat with us every day and enjoy local Bedouin cuisine:

  • €156 (vegetarian)
  • €160 (with meat)

If you choose the local meals, here’s what you can expect:
Breakfast: naan bread, hummus, jam, eggs, dates, coffee, and tea
Lunch: naan bread, tuna, cheese, cucumber or tomato, and fruit
Dinner: every evening, a local chef prepares a traditional Bedouin meal at camp — plenty of fresh vegetables, rice, salads, and salsas, often with chicken.

Of course, you’re welcome to bring your own food, but most participants love joining the cozy Bedouin dinners at camp.

Our local kitchen team will always do their best to accommodate allergies and intolerances. After booking, you can indicate these in your profile. If you eat gluten-free, we recommend bringing a few of your own gluten-free wraps and crackers.

In Jordan’s heat, staying hydrated is essential. You’ll be able to refill your water every morning and evening, so bring a camelbag and/or water bottles with a total capacity of around 3–4 liters. That should easily get you through each hiking day.

Note: Tap water is not drinkable in Jordan.

Can allergies and intolerances be taken into account?

Our local kitchen team will always do their best to accommodate allergies and intolerances. After booking, you can indicate these in your profile. If you eat gluten-free, we recommend bringing a few of your own gluten-free wraps and crackers.

Is there cell phone reception during the trail?

During the trail, you’ll have little to no phone signal. Please let friends and family know in advance so they don’t worry — you’re in good hands.

Your European SIM card will usually work in Jordan, but keep in mind that roaming can get expensive quickly. If you’d like to use data occasionally, you can opt for a local SIM card or an eSIM. Just don’t expect to use it very often, as signal on the trail itself is usually limited.

In the hotels, there’s always Wi-Fi. And honestly, it’s often nice to be offline for a bit — chat with the group and fully enjoy the scenery.

Is there luggage transport?

Yes, you can optionally add luggage transport to your booking. Each morning, you can send your large backpack with the jeeps, and they’ll take it straight to the next campsite. We recommend a backpack of around 60–80 liters.

During the day, you’ll hike with just your daypack, so make sure it’s big enough for everything you’ll need on the trail: water, lunch, snacks, extra layers, and personal items. We recommend a daypack of 25–35 liters.

Can I add or remove options after my booking?

You can usually add extra options up to two weeks before departure, as long as they’re still available.

Please note that some items can’t be changed or removed after booking, such as flights and cancellation insurance.

How does payment work, and when do I need to pay the balance?

Payment is made in two installments. You have 5 days after registering to confirm your booking and pay a 30% deposit of the total amount. After these 5 days, your booking will be automatically cancelled. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 60 days before departure.

You can find all payment details in your profile — each payment has its own specific instructions. If you’re having trouble paying via Bancontact, please choose bank transfer instead. Make sure to use the correct details (reference and account number) so your transfer isn’t returned.

What should I pack for this trail?

You’ll receive a detailed packing list well in advance, with everything you need for the trip.

The basics include sturdy A/B hiking boots with ankle support, a large backpack or duffel (65–80L), a daypack (25–35L), decent camping gear, and protective (rain) clothing.

  • Make sure you bring hiking boots (at least A/B) that you’re comfortable wearing for long distances. The terrain can be quite rough at times, and soft-soled sneakers or other unsuitable shoes will wear out quickly.
  • Also pack proper rain gear and a warm layer. Evenings can get surprisingly chilly. It doesn’t rain often, but when it does, it can come down heavily.
  • Most people need 3–4 liters of water per day, so make sure you can carry that much — a camelback is ideal.
  • Finally, bring camping gear like a tent, sleeping mat, and sleeping bag if you’re not renting these through The Jordan Trail.
What documents do I need for Jordan?

Visa

If you book your flights with The Jordan Trail, your visa is included in the flight price.

If you book your own flights, we recommend buying a Jordan Pass (around €99). It combines your visa with entry to Petra. The Jordan Pass must be purchased online in advance (it’s valid for 3 months after purchase), and it’s important to choose the option that includes 2 days in Petra. You can purchase the Jordan Pass here.

If you buy the visa separately, it costs around €55 and you can get it on arrival at Amman Airport.

International passport

To travel to Jordan, you need an international passport that is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date in Jordan.

Am I allowed to bring my drone to Jordan?

Drones are not allowed in Jordan. If you bring one, it will be confiscated when you arrive at Amman Airport — so please leave your drone at home.

What are Superflex booking conditions, and what are my options if I need to change or cancel?

These terms are available for anyone who books early. This allows you to move your trip for free to another week or cancel with a 100% refund until June 1, 2026.

If you cancel after June 1, 2026, the regular cancellation policy applies.

Can I meet the participants upfront?

About two weeks before departure, you’ll get access to your week’s group chat in the Travelbase App under “Messages”. The guides will share all key practical info there, and you can already get to know the other participants and even make plans for the trail.

Give back to nature by offsetting your CO2 emissions.

The planet gives us so much beauty to admire, but if we want to be able to do that in the future, we must protect it today. That is why we make extra efforts to reduce the impact of our trips, and in the booking form, you can contribute in a reliable way to a climate project from Greentripper, which brings the CO2 emissions of your transport back into balance.

By contributing to their certified project in Uganda, you help distribute more efficient cookstoves that significantly reduce fuel consumption. This initiative of 11 local projects protects vulnerable forests from deforestation, improves the health of families through better indoor air quality, and stimulates the local economy by creating employment. The project is Gold Standard certified, guaranteeing the highest international standards for environmental integrity.

If you choose to contribute to the emissions of your transport, Travelbase will contribute extra for the local emissions. After your trip, you will receive an official carbon credit certificate.
