Explore the Jordan Trail during a multi-day trek along this legendary trade route. Hike through the desert, canyons, mountains, and oases, and follow the life of the Bedouin tribe. End your journey in the breathtaking Petra, one of the seven modern wonders of the world.

Hiking in Jordan

A journey to Jordan is a voyage filled with ancient history, unparalleled adventures, and breathtaking views. Jordan is the welcoming heart of the Middle East, warmed by the sun that constantly showers its rays upon the land. In the distance, you can see camels meandering through the desert, while the scent of wild sage fills the air and the sound of a shepherd calling his goats echoes in the shade. Countless events have unfolded here throughout history, yet the same impressive mountains and vast valleys remain, giving life to the stories found in sacred books. Some even say that it feels like the largest small country in the world. Nothing is far away, yet its starry sky and deserts are infinite.

Shobak to Petra

The Jordan Trail was chosen by National Geographic in 2018 as one of the "must-do" hiking trails in the world. This ancient caravan route transported goods from Egypt & Syria to Saudi Arabia and consists of 8 sections. Each day, you will find yourself in a different Eastern landscape, hiking through mountains, canyons, oases, and deserts, all with stunning views.

During a 6-day journey, we will trek from one Nabataean campspot to another, where you can spend the night in a tent. After the hike, you can relax and enjoy the wonderful Bedouin hospitality. The daily hiking distance ranges from 14 km to 18 km.

The weekly schedule

In just one week, you will hike on the most impressive and remote trails of Jordan. You will discover the Bedouin culture, Middle Eastern hospitality, and stunning mountain ranges. Depending on the weather conditions, routes and distances may change during the season.

You can find all flight and shuttle hours for the fall of 2024 here.

If you prefer to book your flights yourself, that's certainly possible for those who want to arrive earlier, stay longer in Jordan, or continue their travels. Contact info@thejordantrail.org to find out if you can join our shuttle.

How are the hikes organized?

In Jordan, you will be guided by experienced Dutch-speaking guides and locals. At the beginning of the trip, you will receive a detailed trail app that includes tips, tricks, and extensive information about points of interest. There are no markings along the trail, so it is strongly discouraged to undertake this trip on your own.

The Accommodation

During The Jordan Trail, you will mainly be sleeping in a tent. You can rent a 3-season tent from us along with a sleeping mat and sleeping bag (+€65), so you don't have to purchase and bring them on the plane yourself. The rental equipment will be ready in the jeep at the first stop.

The sleeping locations are all in the middle of nowhere. This means that there are no sanitary facilities or running water available. However, you can freshen up at the campgrounds using the carried water. On the first evening, you will sleep in a lodge with basic comfort, in Petra you will stay in a hotel, and on the last evening in Amman, you can optionally book a hotel stay through The Jordan Trail. Participants who register alone (or in an odd-sized group) will share a room with another Jordan Trailer for these overnight stays. We always do our best to assign trailers of the same gender to the same room.

The food

During the hike, you won't come across any restaurants or supermarkets. The only place where you can buy something is in Petra itself on the last day. So you need to bring enough snacks for the entire route. We recommend bringing some cereal bars, energy bars, or glucose tablets to get through the more challenging parts of the trail.

You can join us for daily meals and enjoy the local Bedouin cuisine (+ €150).

BREAKFAST: Naan bread, hummus, jam, eggs, dates, coffee, and tea

LUNCH PACK: Naan bread, tuna, cheese, cucumber or tomato, fruit

DINNER: The local chef will prepare a delicious traditional Bedouin meal. Lots of fresh vegetables, chicken, rice, salads, and salsas.

You are welcome to bring your own food on the trip. But we highly recommend joining the cozy and delicious traditional Bedouin dinners.

FAQ's

You can always send us an email for more information about this trip, below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Who is this trail for?

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 65 with good fitness, health, and a dose of determination should be able to complete this trail. Be aware that it is a challenging trail in an environment you have (most likely) never encountered before. Therefore, make sure you are adequately trained to embark on the trail.

Sanitary facilities

During your time on the trail, you won't come across any sanitary facilities. You will have to go to the toilet the way our ancestors did thousands of years ago. You can freshen up at the end of the day with the water brought by the jeeps. This water is also your drinking water, so don't expect a shower.

Am I allowed to bring my drone to Jordan?

It is not allowed to bring a drone to Jordan. It will be confiscated upon arrival at the airport in Amman, so please leave your drone at home.

Do I have to carry my backpack myself?

Every morning, you can drop off your backpack at the jeeps (backpacks of maximum 60 to 80 liters), and they will transport it directly to the next accommodation. However, it is very important that you bring a sufficiently large daypack to carry the water, food, and equipment you need during the day. We recommend a daypack of approximately 30 to 35 liters for this purpose.

What should I bring?

Bring sturdy hiking shoes (type B) that you feel comfortable enough to embark on a long trek. The terrain can be rough at times, and it can quickly wear out the soft soles of sports shoes or other unsuitable footwear.

Be prepared for changing weather patterns. Make sure to bring protective rain gear and a warm clothing layer. Especially in the evenings, it can get quite chilly. While it doesn't rain often, when it does, it can be a heavy downpour.

Depending on the individual, you will need 3 to 4 liters of water per hike. So make sure you can carry this amount, a camelbag is ideal for this purpose.

Bringing your own tent

If you choose to bring your own tent, you should also bring your own sleeping mat and sleeping bag (at least 2-season rated).

Jordan Trail camping gear option

If you opt for the Jordan Trail camping gear option, you will receive a tent, sleeping mat, and sleeping bag at the beginning of the route. This equipment is made from the most weather-resistant materials.

Visa for Jordan

If you book your flights with The Jordan Trail, the visa is included in the price of your flight.

The visa for Jordan costs approximately €55 and can be purchased upon arrival at the airport in Amman. It is also possible to purchase the Jordan Pass (± €99), which combines your visa with your entry to Petra. The Jordan Pass can only be purchased online in advance, it is important that you choose the option with 2 days in Petra. You can purchase the Jordan Pass here.

What about water?

It is very important to stay hydrated in the heat of Jordan, especially during hiking. You will be able to refill your water supply every evening and morning, so be sure to bring a camelbag/water bottles with a total capacity of about 4 liters! This should help you get through the day without any issues.

Important note: Tap water in Jordan is not drinkable.

The route signage

There are no arrows or trail markings on the trail itself. So it is very important to listen to the guides and keep a close eye on the route. You always follow the guides while hiking.

Give back to nature by offsetting your CO2 emissions.

The planet provides us with so much beauty to admire, but if we want to continue enjoying it in the future, we need to protect it today. That's why we make extra efforts to minimize the impact of our trips, and in the booking form, you can reliably contribute to a climate project by Greentripper, which offsets the CO2 emissions of your transportation. By supporting their certified project "Wildlife Cambodia," you help protect beautiful forests and the wildlife within them, support local communities, and reduce the CO2 emissions of your transportation. If you choose to contribute to the emissions of your transportation, Travelbase will also make additional contributions to the on-site emissions. After your trip, you will receive an official carbon credit certificate.
