Hiking through Jordan

A trip along The Jordan Trail is filled with ancient history, unparalleled adventures, and breathtaking views. Jordan is the warm heart of the Middle East. Together with our local team, you’ll discover a unique side of the country and return home with unforgettable memories.

For thousands of years, history has unfolded here, against the same majestic mountains and vast valleys that shaped the stories of sacred texts. People often say it feels like the biggest small country in the world: nothing is ever far away, yet its starry skies and endless deserts feel infinite. Hiking a part of The Jordan Trail is the perfect way to experience this magical land up close.

Route from Shobak to Petra

The Jordan Trail was recognized by National Geographic in 2018 as one of the world’s top “must-do” hikes. This ancient caravan route once carried goods from Egypt and Syria to Saudi Arabia, and today it leads modern travelers through dramatic mountains, deep canyons, lush oases, and vast deserts.

During our 6-day trail, you’ll hike a spectacular part of the legendary Jordan trail and camp in the heart of nature, moving from one Nabatean campsite to another. Each day, you’ll cover 14 to 18 kilometers before settling in to enjoy the warm hospitality of the Bedouins.

Week schedule of the Jordan Trail

In one week, you'll hike over the most impressive and remote trails of Jordan. You'll discover Bedouin culture, Middle Eastern hospitality, and stunning mountain ranges. Depending on the weather conditions, routes and distances may change throughout the season.

* If you choose to book your flights yourself (and your visa is not included), we strongly recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass, which you can buy here. The entrance to Petra and your travel visa are included in the pass. It is cheaper than buying your visa and Petra entrance separately (Jordan Pass ± €99). Make sure to select the option with two days of access to Petra.

** For solo travelers, a shared room with other participant(s) will be arranged, with separate beds. We do our best to group people of the same gender.

Our guides & support

During the trail, you'll be guided by experienced Travelbase guides and locals who know the route inside and out. They provide daily briefings, share useful tips along the way, and are always available for support or simply a friendly chat. On each hike, guides are positioned at the front, middle, and back of the group to assist anyone who might need extra help.

Because the route is unmarked, we strongly advise against attempting the trail alone. With our close collaboration with local guides, you’ll follow a carefully mapped path that allows you to experience the authentic beauty of Jordan in a safe and rewarding way.

Travelbase trail app

After booking, you’ll get access to the Travelbase Trail App. Inside, you’ll find everything you need before, during, and after your trip: practical tips, flight details, and all the information for along the trail. The app is your digital guide and preparation tool in one. Make sure to install it in advance, so all the info is right at your fingertips.

Hotels & campsites

During The Jordan Trail, you’ll spend most nights camping in the heart of nature. Don’t want to bring your own gear? You can rent a 3-season tent, sleeping mat, and sleeping bag from us for €79 - ready and waiting for you in the jeep at the first stop, so you don’t have to buy or carry them on the plane.

The campsites are remote, with no sanitary facilities or running water, but you can freshen up using the water we provide at each location.

Your first night in Amman and your night in Petra will be spent in a hotel. For the final evening in Amman, you can also book an optional hotel stay. Solo travelers (or participants in an odd-numbered group) will share a room with another Jordan Trail participant, and we always do our best to place guests of the same gender together.

Food & drinks

During the hike, you won’t come across any restaurants or supermarkets. The only place where you can buy something is in Petra on the last day. That’s why you need to bring enough snacks for the entire route. We recommend packing some granola bars, energy bars, or dextrose to keep you going on the tougher parts of the trail.

You can join us for daily meals and enjoy the local Bedouin cuisine (€156 = Vegetarian, €160 = Meat).

BREAKFAST: Naan bread, hummus, jam, eggs, dates… coffee and tea

LUNCH PACK: Naan bread, tuna, cheese, cucumber or tomato, fruit

DINNER: The local chef will prepare a delicious traditional Bedouin meal with plenty of fresh vegetables, chicken, rice, salads & salsas.

You’re welcome to bring your own food on the trip, but we highly recommend joining the cozy and delicious traditional Bedouin dinners.

Necessary documents

For a trip to Jordan, a valid passport is required, which must be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival. Without a valid passport, you won't be able to enter the country.

Additionally, you will need a visa. If you book your flights through us, this is already included in the price. If you're arranging your own flight, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass as it provides access to Petra and takes care of your visa as well.

Superflex booking conditions

These terms are temporarily available for everyone who books early. You can use them to move your trail to a different date within the same season (subject to availability) or cancel for free before January 2, 2026.

Note: this is not the same as cancellation insurance. If you wish to cancel your trip after January 2, the normal cancellation terms will apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can always send us an email for more information about this trip, below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Who is this trail for?

Everyone between the ages of 16 and 65 with a good level of fitness, health, and a bit of perseverance should be able to complete this trail. Be aware that it's a challenging trail, in an environment you’ve (most likely) never encountered before. There’s no real path, so you’ll mainly be walking over rocks and uneven terrain. So make sure you are sufficiently trained to start the trail.

What are the current geopolitical conditions in Jordan?

Jordan is a country known for its stability and safety for travelers. While it’s situated in the heart of a region that can sometimes be characterized by tensions, Jordan has always maintained a peaceful foreign policy, contributing to internal stability and diplomatic relations with its neighbors. The country fosters positive relationships with many states in the region, making it a reliable tourist destination. Despite the geopolitical challenges some neighboring countries face, Jordan remains a welcoming place for travelers, offering a safe environment and a unique experience, far from immediate political concerns.

Are there sanitary facilities on the trail?

During your time on the trail, you will encounter no sanitary facilities. You can freshen up at the end of the day with the water brought by the jeeps. This will also be your drinking water, so don't expect a shower.

We follow a Leave No Trace policy, which means we want to keep nature as untouched as possible. Therefore, we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper.

Am I allowed to bring my drone to Jordan?

It is not allowed to bring a drone to Jordan. It will be confiscated upon arrival at the airport in Amman, so please leave your drone at home.

Do I have to carry my backpack myself?

You can drop off your large backpack each morning with the jeeps (backpacks of a maximum of 60 to 80 liters), and they will take it directly to the next sleeping spot. However, it's very important that you bring a sufficiently large daypack to carry the water, food, and supplies you'll need during the day. We recommend a daypack of about 30 to 40L for this.

What should I bring?

You will receive a detailed packing list well in advance, outlining all the necessary items.

The basics include good hiking shoes that protect the ankles (category A-B/B), a backpack/duffle bag (about 65 – 80 liters), a daypack (about 30-40 liters), sturdy camping gear, and protective (rain) clothing.

  • Bring good hiking shoes (minimum A/B) that you feel comfortable enough in for a long trek. The terrain can be quite rough at times, and these can quickly wear down the soft sole of sports shoes or other unsuitable footwear.
  • Make sure to bring protective rain gear and a warm clothing item. It can get quite chilly in the evenings. It doesn't rain often, but when it does, it can be a heavy downpour.
  • Depending on the person, you'll need 3 to 4 liters of water per hike. So make sure you can carry this; a camelbak is ideal for this purpose.
  • Your own tent: If you choose to bring your own tent, you'll also need to bring your own mat and sleeping bag (minimum 2-season).
  • Jordan Trail camping gear: If you opt for the Jordan Trail camping gear option, you will receive your tent, mat, and sleeping bag at the start of the route.
What documents do I need for Jordan?

Visa

If you book your flights with The Jordan Trail, the visa is included in the price of your flight.

If you book your own flights, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass (approximately €99), which combines your visa with your entry to Petra. The Jordan Pass can only be purchased online in advance, it's important that you choose the option with 2 days in Petra. You can buy the Jordan Pass here. If you purchase the visa separately, it costs about €55 and you can buy it upon arrival at Amman airport.

International Passport

To travel to Jordan, you must have an international passport that is valid for 6 months upon arrival in Jordan!

How much water do you need during the day?

It's really important to stay hydrated in the heat of Jordan, especially during hikes. Every evening and morning, you'll be able to refill your water supply, so definitely bring a camel bag/water bottles for a total of about 4 liters! This way, you should be able to get through the day without any issues.

Note: Tap water in Jordan is not drinkable.

Is the route marked?

There are no arrows or trail markers on the trail itself. It's very important to listen to the guides and keep a close eye on the route. You should always follow the guides while hiking.

Give back to nature by offsetting your CO2 emissions.

The planet provides us with so much beauty to admire, but if we want to continue enjoying it in the future, we need to protect it today. That's why we make extra efforts to minimize the impact of our trips, and in the booking form, you can reliably contribute to a climate project by Greentripper, which offsets the CO2 emissions of your transportation. By supporting their certified project "Wildlife Cambodia," you help protect beautiful forests and the wildlife within them, support local communities, and reduce the CO2 emissions of your transportation. If you choose to contribute to the emissions of your transportation, Travelbase will also make additional contributions to the on-site emissions. After your trip, you will receive an official carbon credit certificate.

What are the Superflex booking conditions?

These conditions are available to everyone who books early. They allow you to reschedule your trail to another period within the same season (depending on availability) or cancel free of charge until January 2, 2026.

Please note: this is not the same as a cancellation insurance. If you wish to cancel your trip after January 2, the normal cancellation conditions apply.

Can I meet my travel companions in advance?

Two weeks before departure, we will send you an invitation link for the WhatsApp group of your week. Important information will be shared by the guides, and you can get to know the other participants.

How does the payment work?

Payment is made in two installments. You have 5 days after registration to confirm your booking and pay a 30% deposit of the total amount. After these 5 days, your booking will be automatically canceled. The remaining balance must be paid no later than 60 days before departure.

All payment details can be found in your profile. Each payment has its own specific information. Make sure to use the correct details (reference, account number) so that your transfer isn't returned to you.

Can I add or remove options after my booking?

Yes, you can always add an option later, up to 3 weeks before your departure, as long as availability allows. However, the cancellation insurance and flights cannot be changed after your reservation.
