Hiking through Jordan

A trip to Jordan is a journey filled with ancient history, unparalleled adventures, and fantastic views. Jordan feels like the warm heart of the Middle East: a land where impressive mountains and vast valleys have been carrying stories for centuries. Nothing is far away, but the desert and starry sky feel endless.

The Jordan Trail has been declared by National Geographic as one of the must-do hikes in the world. You'll walk a part of this legendary caravan route through mountains, canyons, oases, and expansive deserts. During our 5-day trek, you'll cover 14 to 18 kilometers each day and camp in the heart of nature, moving from one Nabatean campsite to another, all while experiencing the warm hospitality of the Bedouins.

Practical information

Dates autumn 2026

From October 4th to November 25th, we will be traveling to Jordan every Wednesday and Sunday. You can check all the specific dates via the calendar at the bottom of the website.

Base price

The base price for this trip starts at €605 per person.

The base price includes the following:

  • 4 camping nights
  • 1 hotel night (Madaba)
  • 1 hotel night (Petra)
  • All internal transport by shuttle – except for airport transport (included with our flights)
  • Guidance from our experienced Travelbase guides and local guides
  • Travelbase Trail app with all the information (tips & tricks, flight info, schedule…)

You can add various extra options to your trip.

Our guides

During the trail, you'll be guided by experienced Travelbase guides and locals who know the route inside and out. They provide daily briefings, share tips along the way, and are always there to help or have a nice chat. During the hikes, there are guides at the front, in the middle, and at the back of the group to support any hikers who may run into trouble along the way.

Since the route is not marked, we advise against undertaking the trek alone. Thanks to our close collaboration with local guides, you'll follow a carefully planned route that lets you truly experience the real Jordan.

Travelbase trail app

After booking, you’ll get access to the Travelbase Trail App. Inside, you’ll find everything you need before, during, and after your trip: practical tips, flight details, and all the information for along the trail. The app is your digital guide and preparation tool in one. Make sure to install it in advance, so all the info is right at your fingertips.

Hotels & campsites

During The Jordan Trail, you will primarily sleep in a tent. The camping spots are located in the middle of nature, without sanitary facilities or running water. However, you can freshen up at the campsites using the water you bring along.

On the first night in Madaba and in Petra, you will stay in a hotel. On the last evening in downtown Amman, you can optionally book a hotel stay. Solo travelers (or participants in an odd group) will share a room with another Jordan Trailer. We always try to place participants of the same gender together.

Food & drinks

You can join us for daily meals and taste the local Bedouin cuisine (€156 vegetarian, €160 meat). You're welcome to bring your own food, but we especially recommend joining the cozy Bedouin dinners!

During the hike, you will encounter no restaurants or supermarkets. You can only buy something on the last day in Petra. So make sure to bring enough snacks for the entire route, like granola bars, energy bars, or glucose tablets.

Necessary documents

For a trip to Jordan, a valid passport is required, which must be valid for at least 6 months upon arrival. You won't be able to enter the country without a valid passport.

Additionally, you will need a visa. If you book your flights through us, this is already included in the price. If you arrange your own flight, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass (valid for 3 months after purchase). This gives you access to Petra and takes care of your visa as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can always send us an email for more information about this trip, below you will find answers to some frequently asked questions.

Who is this trail for?

Since the difficulty of a trail depends on various factors, we've created a clear overview of these factors for you.

Anyone between the ages of 16 and 65 with good fitness and a sense of adventure can take on this trail. The journey includes a healthy dose of physical activity, so being in good health is a must. Also, keep in mind that temperatures can be warm.

Children are not allowed. Would you still like to go on a hiking trip with your family? Then Hike Tribe is a better alternative.

Want to try a multi-day hike for the first time but are unsure about your fitness?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What types of physical activity do I regularly engage in and for how long?
  • Have I had any recent injuries that affect my hiking ability?
  • Can I comfortably walk 15 kilometers over hilly terrain?
  • Can I train specifically in the coming months to prepare well?

If your answers give you full confidence to embark on an adventure, then this trail is definitely for you! You'll receive a training plan a week after booking that will help you prepare so you can comfortably tackle the path.

Still unsure and want to test yourself before heading out on the trail?

Try one of our micro-adventures like The Packraft Trail.

How are the hikes organized?

Before the start of your trip, you'll get access to our Travelbase App, which includes all the highlights, tips & tricks, and practical info. This way, you'll know exactly what your week looks like and what to expect.

During the trail, you'll always walk with experienced Dutch-speaking and local guides. They provide appropriate support, clear explanations, and extra tips along the way. Additionally, you'll receive a morning briefing each day with practical information and key points for the day ahead.

You always depart and arrive as a group. Along the way, you'll have some freedom and the guides will spread out across the group. You'll always walk among the guides, and it's best not to stray too far from them since there are no signs or trail markers. This keeps it adventurous, but above all, safe and worry-free.

Is The Jordan Trail suitable for people with a fear of heights?

You will rarely have to walk directly along a deep gorge or cliff. There's almost always the option to stay a bit further from the edge. On day 1, you will go through a gorge where you'll need to climb down a few times, but the guides are always there to help and support you.

Can I skip a hiking day or leave the trail early if needed?

Of course, you're not meant to skip a day: the trail is designed so that you participate in all walking days. You need to be able to walk the full route. With good health and some focused preparation, you'll definitely be able to do it. That's why you'll receive a training schedule shortly after your booking to help you get ready step by step.

If you do need to drop out along the way due to an injury or illness, the guides will always help find a safe and feasible solution.

When do I need to arrive?

Your first walking day on The Jordan Trail is always the day after your arrival. So if you book a week from October 4 to 11, you’ll arrive on October 4 and start hiking on October 5.

So, you don’t need to plan any extra days before or after your reserved week: our dates already include the arrival day and the departure day. If you want to stay a bit longer to explore Jordan (like Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea), that’s totally fine! In that case, you’ll arrange your flights yourself.

In the Travelbase App, you'll see the period as October 4 to 11 (example). That’s the full stay period:

  • October 4: arrival
  • October 5-9: hiking
  • October 10: Petra
  • October 11: departure

You can also add an optional hotel stay in Amman for the last night. In this example, that’s the night of October 10 to 11.

You can add that extra night to your booking up to two months before departure, depending on availability.

Where will we sleep and what sanitary facilities are available?

You will sleep the first and last night in a hotel. If you choose the optional extra night, that will also be in a hotel. During the trail itself, you'll sleep in tents, in some amazing locations.

During the trail, you will encounter no sanitary facilities. This means there are no toilets and no showers. However, you can freshen up at the end of the day with the water brought by the jeeps. That water also serves as drinking water, so expect to “freshen up a bit” rather than having a long shower.

We follow a strict Leave No Trace policy. Therefore, we ask everyone to bring small bags for toilet paper or hygiene wipes, so we can leave nature as untouched as possible.

What about food and drinks?

During the hike, you will encounter no restaurants or supermarkets. The only place where you can buy something along the way is in Petra on the last day. So make sure to bring enough snacks for the entire route. Think of granola bars, energy bars, nuts, or glucose to help you through the tougher sections.

You can choose to eat with us daily and enjoy the local Bedouin cuisine.

  • €156 vegetarian
  • €160 with meat

If you choose the local food, you can expect naan bread, hummus, jam, eggs, dates, coffee, and tea for breakfast. For lunch, you'll get naan bread, tuna, cheese, cucumber or tomato, and fruit. For dinner, a local chef will prepare a traditional Bedouin meal every evening. Expect plenty of fresh vegetables, rice, salads, and salsas, often complemented with chicken.

Of course, you are welcome to bring your own food, but most participants enjoy joining the cozy Bedouin dinners at camp.

Our local kitchen team always does its best to accommodate allergies and intolerances. After booking, you can indicate this in your profile. If you follow a gluten-free diet, we recommend bringing some of your own gluten-free wraps and crackers.

In the heat of Jordan, staying hydrated is crucial. Every morning and evening, you can refill your water supply. So make sure to bring your own camelbag and/or water bottles for a total of about 3 to 4 liters. This way, you should be able to get through the day without any issues.

Note: Tap water is not drinkable in Jordan.

Can allergies and intolerances be taken into account?

Our local kitchen team always does its best to accommodate allergies and intolerances. After booking, you can indicate this in your profile. If you follow a gluten-free diet, we recommend bringing some of your own gluten-free wraps and crackers.

Is there coverage during the trail?

During the trail, you will have little to no reception. Please let your loved ones know so they don't worry. You're in good hands.

Your European SIM card usually works in Jordan, but keep in mind that roaming can get expensive quickly. If you want to use data occasionally, you can opt for a local SIM card or e-SIM. Just don’t expect to use it too often, as the signal on the trail is usually limited.

In the hotels, there is always Wi-Fi. Along the way, it’s often nicer to be offline for a bit, chat with the group, and fully enjoy the surroundings.

Is there luggage transport?

Yes, you can optionally add baggage transport to your booking. Every morning, you can send your large backpack with the jeeps. They'll take it directly to the next sleeping spot. Expect a backpack of about 60 to 80 liters.

During the day, you'll only be hiking with your daypack, so it's important that it's big enough for everything you'll need on the way: water, lunch, snacks, extra layers, and your personal items. We recommend a daypack of 25 to 35 liters.

Can I add or remove options after my booking?

You can usually add extra options up to 2 weeks before departure, as long as there is still availability.

Some things cannot be adjusted or removed after your booking, such as flights and the cancellation insurance.

How do the payments work?

Payment is made in two installments. You have 5 days after registration to confirm your booking and pay a deposit of 30% of the total amount. After these 5 days, your booking will be automatically canceled. The remaining balance must be paid at least 60 days before departure.

You can find all payment details in your profile. Each payment has its own specific information. If you're having trouble paying via Bancontact, choose bank transfer instead. Make sure to use the correct details (reference, account number) so your transfer doesn't get sent back to you.

What should I bring?

You will receive a detailed packing list well in advance, outlining all the necessary gear.

The basics include good hiking shoes that protect the ankles (category A/B), a backpack/duffel bag (about 65–80L), a daypack (about 25-35L), decent camping gear and protective (rain) clothing.

  • Make sure to bring good hiking shoes (minimum A/B) that you feel comfortable enough in for a long trek. The terrain can sometimes be quite rough, and soft-soled sneakers or other unsuitable shoes will wear out quickly.
  • Definitely pack protective rain gear and a warm layer. It can get quite chilly in the evenings. It doesn't rain often, but when it does, it can be a heavy downpour.
  • Depending on the person, you will need 3 to 4 liters of water per day. So make sure you can carry this; a camelback is ideal for this.
  • Camping gear like a tent, sleeping mat, and sleeping bag if you’re not renting these through The Jordan Trail.
What documents do I need for Jordan?

Visa

If you book your flights with The Jordan Trail, the visa is included in the price of your flight.

If you book your own flights, we recommend purchasing a Jordan Pass (approximately €99), which combines your visa with access to Petra. The Jordan Pass can only be purchased online in advance (valid for 3 months after purchase), and it's important to choose the option with 2 days in Petra. You can buy the Jordan Pass here. If you purchase the visa separately, it costs about €55 and can be obtained upon arrival at Amman airport.

International passport

To travel to Jordan, you must have an international passport that is valid for at least 6 months upon arrival in Jordan!

Am I allowed to bring my drone to Jordan?

It is not allowed to bring a drone to Jordan. It will be confiscated upon arrival at the airport in Amman, so please leave your drone at home.

What are the super flexible booking conditions and what are my options for cancellation?

These terms are available for anyone who books early. This allows you to move your trip for free to another week or cancel with a 100% refund until June 1, 2026.

If you cancel after June 1, 2026, the regular cancellation policy applies.

Can I meet my travel companions in advance?

About 2 weeks before departure, you'll gain access to the group chat for your week via the Travelbase App under “Messages.” The guides will share all the important practical info there, and you can also get to know the other participants and make plans for the journey.
